Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Senior Packy Witkowski scored a game-high 32 points to lead Coast Guard to a 108-93 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over MIT.
Senior Justin Kane became the 21st player in program history to score 1,000 career points. Kane had 19 points with a team-high 11 rebounds, for his third double-double of the season and finished the game with exactly 1,000 points.
Witkowski moved into fifth place on the Bears' all-time scoring list with 1,380 points and he is now also third all-time with 236 treys as he knocked down eight of 12 from 3-point range as Coast Guard made a season-high 17 trifectas.
Witkowski has scored 25 or more points in his last four games and 30 or more in the last two games.
The Bears improve to 8-13 overall and 3-8 in conference play, while MIT drops to 10-12 on the season and 3-8 in NEWMAC action.
Junior J.T. Cox recorded a season-high 18 points off the bench and senior Noah Baldez had 16 points with a game-high seven assists.
Ian Hinkley and Julian Manyika combined for 42 points for MIT, tallying 21 points apiece. Alex Cho scored 16 and Matas Masys had 15 points for the Engineers.
Coast Guard took a quick 13-5 lead within the opening three minutes of play. Cho made a three pointer at 16:19 to cut the Engineers deficit to 15-12. Cox answered with a layup at 15:21 that sparked a 7-2 run for the Bears, as they took a 22-14 lead.
The Engineers went on an 8-2 run in the final two minutes of the first half as they trailed 56-52. Coast Guard answered, scoring the final eight points of the half as they took a 64-51 lead at the half.
Witkowski knocked down back-to-back three's to open the half with a 17 point lead, 70-53. The Bears held on to the double-digit lead throughout the half. The Bears eclipsed the 100-point mark on a layup from Kane with 5:48 left. Kane scored his 1,000th career point with a free throw with 2:50 remaining.
Coast Guard went 38 for 72 (52.8%) from the field and 17 for 36 (47.2%) from downtown. MIT went 35 from 77 (45.5%) from the field and 19 for 37 (51.4) from downtown. The Engineers outrebounded the Bears 38-35.
The 108 points is the most points Coast Guard has scored since posting a school-record 113 points in a 113-61 win over Mitchell in the 2007-'08 season.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday as they look to sweep the season series when they travel to Clark in a NEWMAC game at 3:00. Coast Guard defeated Clark 103-77 on January 22nd
