Baldez Scores 1,000th Point as Bears Pick Up First NEWMAC Win

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Noah Baldez tied a career-high with a game-high 25 points and became the 20th player in program history to score 1,000 career points as Coast Guard won it first conference game of the year with a 103-77 win over Clark in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Baldez was eight for nine from the field including three for three from 3-point range and had six rebounds and four assists to finish the night with 1,011 career points.

Clark's Biko Gayman also scored his 1,000th career point as he led the Cougars with 22 points. Matthew Waggett had 17 points while Tyler Daven finished with 12 points in the loss.

Packy Witkowski added 21 points off the bench for the Bears while Justin Kane (13), Madison Maloney (11) and J.T. Cox (10) also scored in double figures as the Bears scored a season-high 103 points. It was a career-high for Maloney. Perez had a game-high nine rebounds in the win for Coast Guard.

The 103 points are the most points the Bears have scored since a 105-99 overtime at Clark last season.

The Bears snap a five game slide and improve to 6-9 overall and 1-4 in the NEWMAC while Clark drops to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Coast Guard shot a season-high 57.1 percent (36-63) from the field and also shot a season-high 56.5 percent from 3-point range (13-23).

Clark was 29 of 66 from the floor (43.9 percent) and made 12 of 35 from behind the arc (34.3 percent).

The Bears, who never trailed, jumped out to a quick 11-0 lead following a Baldez layup with 17:37 left in the first half. Baldez scored his 1,000 point on a layup off a steal from Garrett Drummond with 2:18 left in the half giving Coast Guard a 42-26 lead. The Bears led 46-30 at the half.

Coast Guard leading 83-68 with 6:49 left used a 15-3 run to put the game away taking a 98-71 lead with 2:55 left.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they host Springfield in a NEWMAC game at 3:00.
