Bears Pick Up First NEWMAC Win of the Season

DANVERS, Mass . – Will Stephens had three hits and Jeremy Lhotka drove in three runs leading Coast Guard to a 9-5 win over host Emerson in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Coast Guard improves to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the NEWMAC while Emerson drops to 3-13 overall and 0-3 in conference play.            

Dustin Reeder (2-1) allowed just one hit thru the first six innings before being touched for three runs in the seventh. He went 6 2/3 innings and allowed three hits and four earned runs while walking just one and striking out six to get the win.

Ben Webster came on in the seventh and got a ground ball out with the tying runs on second and third.

Dan Finn came on with one out in the ninth and got a double play ground out to the only batter he faced to register his second save of the season.

Tom Ankers added a pair of hits and scored four runs for the Bears while Pressley had two hits and drove in two runs in the win.

The Bears got two in the top of the first on an RBI ground out by Jeremy Lhotka and an RBI single by Jon Pressley.

Coast Guard added three more in the third on an RBI double by Stephens, a sacrifice fly by Lhotka and an RBI by Pressley on a ground ball for a 5-0 lead.

The Lions got on the board in the fourth before another sacrifice fly by Lhotka in the fifth gave the Bears a 6-1 lead.

Emerson scored three runs with two outs in the seventh cutting the deficit to 6-4.

Jake Behne's two-run single in the top of the ninth gave the Bears a pair of insurance runs pushing the lead to 8-4 before Reed Jenkins delivered an RBI single for the 9-4 lead.

The Lions would get a run in the bottom of the ninth to close the scoring.

Coast Guard is back in action on Thursday when the Bears host Elms in non-conference at 3:30.
