Kane Has Career-High 25 Points as Bears Cruise Past Mitchell

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Justin Kane had 17 of his career-high 25 points in the first half leading host Coast Guard to a 90-65 win over Mitchell in the non-conference game between the two New London schools.

Kane hits three consecutive 3-pointers in a span of 52 seconds as Coast Guard jumped out to a 15-2 lead under four minutes into the game and the Bears, who led by as many as 40 cruised to victory. Kane was 9 for 12 from the floor including 4 of 5 from 3-point range.

Freshman Madison Maloney recorded his first career double-double as he finished with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Packy Witkowski added 15 points, Noah Baldez had 12 points and Tyler Perez had 10 points and nine rebounds in the win.

Coast Guard (3-2) shot a season-high 48 percent from the floor (36-75) while making 10 of 32 (31.1 percent) from 3-point range.

Matt Finke led Mitchell (1-2) with 20 points while Julius Hemingway added 11 points for the Mariners. Jalen Benson and Dra Harrison had a team-high six rebounds each.

Mitchell was 24 of 70 shooting (34.3 percent) and made just 4 of 20 from 3-point range. Coast Guard held a 54-33 edge on the glass with 16 offensive boards.

Coast Guard led 55-31 at halftime as they shot 53.7 percent (22-41) in the opening half and outrebounded Mitchell 28-11 with 11 offensive rebounds to the Mariners one offensive board.

The Bears pushed the lead to 70-37 in the first four minutes of the second half. Coast Guard had its largest lead 84-44 with 8:28 left before Mitchell outscored 21-6 to finish the game.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they play at Roger Williams at 1:00.
