Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Lauren Gedney had a match-high 21 kills as Wellesley remained unbeaten in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and ran its win streak to 11 with a 3-1 win over Coast Guard.
The Blue won by scores of 25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22 to improve to 16-3 overall and 8-0 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 14-7 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
Nicole Doerges added 15 kills and nine digs while Izzy Seebold led Wellesley with 13 digs and 42 assists. TylerBell Smith had a match-high six blocks for Wellesley in the win.
Angelou Dunton led the Bears with 13 kills to go with eight digs while Amanda Dake led the way with 15 digs to go with nine kills. Noelle Tursky led Coast Guard with 25 assists, Veronica Hine added 14 digs and Mary Sweet led the Bears with four blocks.
Wellesley would use a 9-1 spurt to take control early in the first to take a 9-3 lead. Coast Guard trailing 24-18 fought off four straight game points before falling 25-22.
The second game was back-and-forth as neither team led by more than two points until Coast Guard took a 19-16 lead. The Blue would however score the final nine points of the game beating the Bears 25-19 with Gedney having four kills in the final nine points.
The third game was again a see saw battle with neither team leading by more than one point until Coast Guard used a 7-2 run to open up a 15-10 lead. The Bears led 20-15 before Wellesley cut the deficit to 20-18. The Bears would force a fourth game with a 25-22 win.
Coast Guard held a 14-13 lead in the fourth before Wellesley ran off seven of the next eight points for a 21-14 edge with Gedney again having four kills in the run. Coast Guard would not go quietly as they trailed 23-16 and ran off six straight with Dunton serving to cut the deficit to 23-22 before the Blue scored the final two points to close out the match.
The Bears are back in action on Friday night when they travel just down the road to take on Connecticut College at 7:00.
