Volleyball closes out regular season at Emerson tri-match

BOSTON, Mass. –

In the final matches of the regular season, Coast Guard dropped a pair to Emerson College and Brandeis. In their match vs each other, Emerson completed their tri-match sweep with a four-set win over the Judges. Emerson closes out their regular season at 22-4 (9-2 NEWMAC) with the sweep. The Brandeis split concludes their regular season at 12-15. They will travel to UAA Championship host school Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania next Saturday November 14th at 1:00 PM for a quarterfinal matchup vs WashU.

Emerson Box Score
After going down 2-0 to Emerson by scores of 25-20 and 25-19, the Bears showed a familiar trait of this season: their ability to play with their backs against the wall. Facing defeat, Coast Guard rode the hot hands of Sam Ventimiglia (Key West, Fla.) and Corey Lemmer (San Francisco, Calif.) to seven of the first nine points of set three. Staving off numerous Lion comeback efforts, the Bears converted that early lead into a set three 25-21 win, closing it off on a connection between the dynamic duo of Courtney Shire (Cape May, N.J.) and Abby Schweitzer (Emmaus, Pa.), with Shire assisting Schweitzer on her kill.

The momentum from the third carried right into set four, with a dominant 25-16 set win in which at one point the Bears scored 11 of 12. In the winner-take-all fifth set however, Emerson finally took back hold of the match. They took a commanding 7-2 lead early that the Bears cut to 8-7 but the Lions got hot again at both the service line and the net on attack to take the set 15-10 and match 3-2.

Coast Guard was led in the Emerson match by their libero Courtney Shire. Shire had a team-high 38 digs to along with eight assists and an ace while not making a reception error all match across 25 attempts. At the net on defense was a strong showing from a pair of freshmen: Asia Fulp (Seaside, Calif.) and Addison Krajicek (Aviano, Italy) who each had five blocks.

There were three Bears in double figures in kills vs Emerson, Schweitzer with 15, Ventimiglia with 12, and Lemmer with 11. Ava Ahokovi (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Allie Jenkins (Dripping Springs, Tex.) were the distributors for the attack, with 20 and 16 assists respectively.

Brandeis Box Score
After the strong comeback effort in the five-setter vs Emerson, the Bears ran out of steam facing Brandeis. The Judges won the match 3-0 by scores of 25-16, 26-24, 25-19.

Courtney Shire had a well-rounded match with 14 digs, an assist, and a kill. On the day as a whole, Shire cracked the top 10 in CGA history in single season digs, reaching 483 and counting today, good for 8th all-time in program history.

The Bears were led in kills again by the trio of Corey Lemmer, Abby Schweitzer, and Sam Ventimiglia, who combined for 15. Setters Ava Ahokovi and Allie Jenkins each added a kill and combined for 19 assists.
