Bears Rally Past Babson

Babson Park, Mass.-- Packy Witkowski scored 22 points to lead Coast Guard men's basketball to a 76-60 victory over Babson in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on the road on Saturday afternoon. The Bears improve to 12-6 overall and 3-5 in the NEWMAC. Babson drops to 12-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

The Bears snap a 15 game losing streak to Babson dating back to the 2010-11 season when the Bears defeated Babson in the first round of the NEWMAC tournament.

Witkowski was 9-17 from the field, 2-4 from behind the arc, and brought down a team-high seven rebounds to lead the Bears. Noah Baldez scored 19 points in the victory as he went 9-16 from the field, adding four rebounds and four steals.

Frank Oftring and Jack Coolahan lead Babson with 15 points each. Beau Smith also added 10 points for the Beavers.

Coast Guard jumped to a 25-8 lead in the opening 10 minutes of play, including 13 points from Witkowski. Babson answered by taking a 12-3 run to cut their deficit 28-20. Nolan Benson made a layup at 5:07 that sparked a 14-5 run for the Bears. He then capped the run with no time left on the clock when he made a layup to give the Bears a 42-25 advantage at halftime.

Luke Daniels and Witkowski opened the second half with a combined eight points as the Bears increased their lead, 50-33. Beau Smith sunk a three with eight minutes remaining to bring the Bears within eight but Coast Guard went on a 12-4 run in the final minutes to extend their lead a secure the 76-60 final.

The Bears shot 54.1% (33-61) from the field and held a 33-26 advantage in rebounds

Coast Guard will return to action on Wednesday, January 30 at 5:30 PM when they travel to Springfield.
