Bears Drop Slugfest at Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Wesleyan scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to beat Coast Guard in a non-conference slugfest 13-12.

Wesleyan improves to 14-6 overall while the Bears drop to 6-14 on the season.

Jeremy Lhotka was 3 for 3 with a triple, two RBI's and three runs scored, Will Stephens had two hits including a double and scored three runs while Luke Thompson had a double and drove in four for Coast Guard.

Jon Pressley's RBI single in the second gave the Bears a 1-0 lead before Lhotka's RBI single in the third gave Coast Guard a 2-0 lead.

Ryan Earle's three-run homer down the right field line in the third gave Wesleyan a 3-2 lead before Nick Valicenti's solo shot to left in the fourth pushed the lead to 4-2.

Coast Guard erased a 4-2 deficit as they scored three runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Will Stephens, RBI triple by Lhotka and an RBI ground out by Luke Thompson to take a 5-4 lead.

Wesleyan would score three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 10-5 lead.

The Bears would responded however tying the game with five runs in the seventh.

In the seventh, Thompson had a two-run double to right center, Alex Murdoch had an RBI single, Thompson would later score on a wild pitch before Reed Jenkins RBI double to right tied the game 10-10.

The Cardinals took the lead 11-10 on an unearned run in the seventh.

Coast Guard tied the game in the eighth when Trey Rittenhouse, who singled, scored later on a passed ball before Thompson's sacrifice fly gave Coast Guard a 12-11 lead.

Alex Cappitelli's two-run single up the middle in the bottom of the eighth would give Wesleyan the 13-12 lead.

Brett Sullivan (2-4), one of six Coast Guard pitchers, allowed a pair of runs in the eighth and took the loss.

The Bears are back in action on Friday at WPI in a NEWMAC game at 3:30
