Bears Fall to Spartans

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard fell to Castleton 11-4 in non-conference action Friday afternoon.

With the loss the Bears fall to 6-6 on the season while the Spartans improve to 6-6.

Coast Guard was led by sophomore Jon Pressley who went 1-3 with two RBI's. Junior Jeremy Lhotka went 2-3 with a double and an RBI while junior Will Stephens was 3-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Junior Luke Thompson came across to score twice going 1-3 with two walks.

Deagan Poland finished with a game high four RBI's for Castleton while Jonathan Lindau hit a two-run homerun.

Castleton 5-0 lead through three before the Bears go two back in the bottom of the third as Stephens hit an RBI single followed by a sacrifice fly from Pressley making the score 5-2.

The Spartans pushed their lead back to five in the top of the fifth before closed within three once again on a RBI single from Pressley in the bottom of the fifth and then an RBI double from Lhotka in the seventh made the score 7-4.

Castleton, however, ended the comeback scoring two runs in both the eighth and ninth and did not allow another run earning the 11-4 non-conference win.

Five pitchers combined to allow nine hits and 10 earned runs striking out six. They also combined to hit eight batters. Junior Walter Harris (1-2) takes the loss allowing three earned runs over two innings on four hits.

Joe Grafton (3-2) pitched a solid six innings allowing three earned runs on seven hits and striking out seven. Aaron Smith and Garrett Moran combined to pitch three innings of relief allowing one earned run on three hits and striking out four.

Coast Guard is back in action tomorrow when they travel to Babson Park, Massachusetts for a double header with the Babson Beavers. First pitch is noon.
