Bears Drop Pair to Open NEWMAC Schedule

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Wheaton got a pair of quality starts and the Lyons offense totaled 22 runs to sweep Coast Guard 13-5 and 9-3 to open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.

The Lyons improve to 7-7 overall and 2-0 in conference play while the Bears drop to 5-4 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.

Junior Luke Thompson continued his hot streak at the plate as he went 6 for 9 in the doubleheader. He is 16 for 22 in his last five games with three or more hits in five of those games to raise his NEWMAC best batting average to .514.

Willy Boyd homered in both games for Wheaton while Trevor Marques drove in five runs in the sweep.

GAME ONE: WHEATON 13, COAST GUARD 5

Brandon Furdon (1-1) allowed just two hit and one run over the first five innings, walked four and fanned six to pick up the win for Wheaton.

Sophomore Brett Sullivan (2-1) took the loss as he allowed seven hits and six runs, all unearned, while walking just one and striking out six in five innings work.

The Lyons scored five times in the third and led 6-0 before Coast Guard finally got on the board on a sacrifice fly by junior Luke Thompson in the fifth.

Junior Jeremy Lhotka's three-run double in the seventh pulled the Bears to within 8-4 before Wheaton struck for four more runs in the eighth to put the game away.

Thompson had two of the Bears seven hits in the loss, going 2 for 4 with a sacrifice fly and a run scored.

GAME TWO: WHEATON 9, COAST GUARD 3

Dan Southerland (2-1) allowed six hits and a pair of earned runs and struck out eight over 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win while three relievers allowed just one run on four hits over the final 3 2/3 innings.

Thompson was 4 for 5 with a double and two RBI's while sophomore Alex Cordes added two hit for the Bears, who finished game two with ten hits.

Junior Dustin Reeder (0-2) was touched for five earned runs in six innings work while walking three and striking out three to take the loss.

Wheaton got three in the third, one in fourth and another in the sixth to build the 5-0 lead. Coast Guard got on the board in the sixth on a two-run double by Thompson cutting the deficit to 5-2.

The Lyons would put the game out of reach with three in the eighth to push the lead to 9-2.

Coast Guard scored once in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by junior Will Stephens.

The Bears are back in action on Monday when they host Albertus Magnus at 3:30.
