Bears Drop Northern Opener

Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – James Smiegocki scattered seven hits and allowed an earned run over 7 1/3 innings leading Johnson & Wales to a 6-1 win over Coast Guard in the Bears' northern opener.

Coast Guard had its four-game win streak snapped to drop to 5-2 on the season while Johnson & Wales improved to 7-3.

Junior Luke Thompson had three of the Bears seven hits in the loss for Coast Guard. It was his third straight game with three or more hits. He has ten hits in the last three games.  Thompson was 3 for 4 and is 10 for 13 in the last three games and is  now hitting .462 on the season.

Coast Guard had runners on second and third with nobody out in first before an intentional walk to reigning NEWMAC Player of the Week sophomore Jon Pressley and three strikeouts kept the Bears off the scoreboard.

The Wildcats had the bases loaded with one out in the home half of the first, but junior Walter Harris pitched out of the jam to keep the game scoreless.

Johnson & Wales took a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

The Bears had runners on first and third with one out in the fifth, but again could not score before Johnson & Wales would score twice in the fifth and sixth to take a 5-0 lead.

The Bears would get on the board in the seventh as junior Reed Jenkins led off with an infield single, moved to second on a wild pitch and later came around on an RBI single by junior Trey Rittenhouse to make the score 5-1 before the Wildcats added a run in the eighth to close the scoring.

Harris (1-1) took the loss for Coast Guard as he worked six innings allowing eight hits and five earned runs.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow when they host Wheaton in a doubleheader to open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at noon.
