Late Wheaton Run Helps Lyons Hold Off Bears

NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton scored 11 straight points late in the game as the Lyons beat Coast Guard 82-68 in a key New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

The Lyons, who turned the ball over just twice in the game, improved to 11-7 overall and 3-4 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 9-7 overall and 1-6 in conference play.

Coast Guard which trailed by as many as 10 in the second half, used a 9-3 spurt capped on a 3-pointer by freshman Paul Costain with 3:39 to cut the deficit to 67-64 before the Lyons put the game away scoring 11 straight pushing the lead to 78-64 with 1:43 left.

Sophomore Justin Kane was 8 of 14 from the floor and led the Bears with 20 points and a career-high 17 rebounds to register his sixth double-double of the season. Sophomore Noah Baldez added 11 points for the Bears.

The Lyons would however score and then capitalize on back-to-back Coast Guard turnovers to begin the 11-0 run to put the game away.

Wheaton jumped out to a 9-2 lead just over three minutes into the game. The Bears would cut the deficit to 12-9 on a trey by sophomore Packy Witkowski with 15:06 left in the half.

The Lyons would use an 8-2 run to open up its largest lead of the half 26-16 with 8:35 left. The Lyons led 36-29 at the break.

The Bears shot 48.2 percent from the field (27-56) and made 6 of 11 from 3-point range while Wheaton was 27 of 54 from the field and hit 9 of 24 from behind the arc.

Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday when the Bears host defending national champion Babson in a NEWMAC game at 3:00.
