Sullivan's Complete Game Win Gives Bears Split With Springfield

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Brett Sullivan went the distance scattering seven hits while allowing one earned run and striking out a career-high eight as Coast Guard beat Springfield 11-1 to salvage a spilt of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader as the Pride won the opener 13-4.

Springfield is now 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC while the Bears are 9-14 overall and 1-6 in conference play.

Coast Guard is back in action on Sunday when they play a NEWMAC doubleheader at Emerson at noon.

GAME ONE – SPRINGFIELD 13, COAST GUARD 4

Junior Joe Gamache (1-0) allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out 13 over seven innings to get the win.

Sophomore Brandon Drabinski had four hits including a homer, drove in three runs and scored three runs while senior Colin King also had four hits including three doubles to lead Springfield's 16 hit attack.

Freshman Chad Shade had three hits and drove in a run while junior Kyle Allen had a pair of doubles for Springfield.

Coast Guard senior Timbo Duncan hit a pair of homers to tie the single-season school record of six and move into second place on the Bears all-time home run list with 14, just one shy of the career mark of 15 held by Gregg McHenry ('88).

Duncan hit a solo homer in the second to give the Bears a 1-0 lead before Drabinski's two-run blast in the third gave the Pride the lead for good 2-1.

Springfield added an unearned run in the fourth for a 3-1 lead. Coast Guard pulled to within 3-2 on an RBI ground out by freshman Jon Pressley scoring sophomore Will Stephens, who led off the inning with a double.

The Pride scored four runs in the sixth as senior Mike Jamieson had a two-run double while junior Mark Joao and Drabinski added RBI singles as Springfield took a 7-2 lead.

Springfield put the game away with three more in the eighth as junior Kyle Allen had a two-run double before Shade's RBI double made it 10-2 and the Pride would score three more in the ninth with Allen having the run driven in the inning with an RBI double to make it 13-2.

Duncan would add a two-run homer in the ninth to close the scoring.

Senior Eric Vrissis (2-3) took the loss for the Bears as he worked the first 5 2/3 innings and was touched for ten hits and five earned runs.

GAME TWO – COAST GUARD 11, SPRINGFIELD 1

Coast Guard scored seven runs in the sixth inning on just two hits taking advantage of five walks and an error to break the game open.

Sullivan (2-0) was outstanding going the distance walking three and striking out eight while allowing just the one run to record his first career complete game.

The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the second as junior Alex Murdoch drew a bases loaded walk before sophomore  Jake Behne's sacrifice fly.

The Pride would score their run in the third on an RBI single by Joao to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Coast Guard got a run back in the fifth as sophomore Jeremy Lhotka was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

In the seven-run sixth inning, the Bears got to the Springfield bullpen as junior Zach Serna and senior Brendan McNeil drew bases loaded walks, two runs scored on wild pitches, one on an error before Murdoch's two-run triple capped the inning and gave Coast Guard a 10-1 lead.

Pressley's RBI double scored Duncan who led off with a double in the eighth to close the scoring.

Serna and sophomore Trey Rittenhouse each had two hits in the win for the Bears.

Joao and sophomore Matt Fraioli each had two hits for Springfield.
