Bears Fall in NEWMAC Finale

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. –  Sophomore Mike Tice threw seven shutout innings and senior Adam Chochrek drove in four runs as Clark beat Coast Guard 12-1 to clinch a berth in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament in the final conference game of the season for both teams.

Clark improves to 26-10 overall and 10-7 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 12-23 overall and 3-14 in conference play. This is possibly the final game of the season for Coast Guard, who may or may not play one final non-conference game against Mitchell on Wednesday.

Tice (3-2) scattered five hits, walked three and struck out five to get the win while senior Luke Sniatkowski (0-2) went 3 2/3 innings and took the loss for the Bears.

Clark scored three in the first as freshman Nick Jordan and junior Kyle Bonicki singled and Jordan would score on a wild pitch before junior Teddy Downing walked. Bonicki would score on a throwing error and Downing later scored on another wild pitch for a 3-0 lead.

Downing tripled and scored on a ground out by senior Adam Chochrek in the third for a 4-0 lead.

The Cougars blew the game open with four in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead highlighted by a three-run double by Chochrek.

Jordan had an RBI single in the sixth another run would score on an error while the third and final run of the inning ame across on a double play ground out making the score 11-0.

Freshman Kyle Shaw's RBI single in the sixth made the score 12-0.

Coast Guard would score its only run in the eighth on an RBI single by freshman Jon Pressley, who had two of the Bears eight hits in the loss.

Jordan had three hits for Clark while sophomore Zach Kelley, graduate student Chris Dibble, Shaw and Bonicki each added two hits.

The back end of the Bears bullpen had three shutout innings and sophomore Jack Brandt threw a scoreless eight and freshman Brett Sullivan allowed just one hit and fanned three in getting the final six outs.
