Box Score 2 NORTHBORO, Mass. – Steven Gallagher homered twice in each game as WPI hit 11 home runs in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader sweep of Coast Guard winning 22-4 and 12-10.
WPI improves to 20-8, 9-3 in the conference while the Bears drop to 12-19 overall and 3-10 in the NEWMAC.
GAME ONE – WPI 22, COAST GUARD 4
WPI exploded for nine runs in the first inning and never looked back hitting six homers to beat the Bears in the opener.
Freshman Alex Cordes had the first three game of his career in the loss and he also drove in two runs.
Freshman Brett Sullivan (3-1) took the loss for Coast Guard lasting just 1/3 of an inning.
GAME TWO – WPI 12, COAST GUARD 10
WPI jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Bears scored five times in the third to tie the game 5-5 as senior Kyle Jackson had a two-run double and sophomore Trey Rittenhouse added a two-run single which tied the game.
WPI answered right back with four in the home half of the fifth and led 11-7 before Coast Guard scored three in the eighth on a solo homer by Duncan and a two-run shot by Lhotka to make the score 11-10.
The Engineers added an insurance run in the eighth to close the scoring.
Junior Zach Serna, Rittenhouse, Jackson, and Duncan each had two hits in the nightcap for Coast Guard.
Senior Timbo Duncan added to his home run records as he launched his ninth of the season and 17th of his career in the second game while sophomore Jeremy Lhotka hit his first career homer in game two for the Bears.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they host Wheaton in a NEWMAC game at 3:30.
