Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Brendan McNeil hit a grand slam while junior Zach Serna doubled, homered and drove in three runs leading Coast Guard to an 11-9 win over Wesleyan in a non-conference game.
Coast Guard improves to 12-16 overall while Wesleyan, ranked sixth in New England, drops to 13-7 on the season.
The Bears scored six runs in the first highlighted by McNeil's grand slam before Coast Guard added three more in the second with RBI singles by senior Kyle Jackson and freshman Jon Pressley for a 9-0 lead.
Wesleyan got on the board on an RBI single by senior Will O'Sullivan in the third before Serna's two-run blast in the home half gave the Bears an 11-1 lead.
Junior Matt Jeye's two-run double in the fifth cut the deficit to 11-3. Wesleyan would score five times in the sixth as sophomore Danny Rose had a two-run double before sophomore Andrew Keith followed with an RBI triple, O'Sullivan added and RBI double and Jeye's RBI single made the score 11-8.
Freshman Jesse Levy-Rubinett hit a solo homer in the ninth for Wesleyan to close the scoring.
Sophomore Jake Behne reached base all five times as he was 3 for 3, walked and was hit by a pitch and scored three runs in the win for the Bears while Serna and Jackson each had two hits.
O'Sullivan, Jeye and sophomore Andrew Keith each had two hits for Wesleyan.
The game featured 11 pitchers, six from Coast Guard and five from Wesleyan.
Coast Guard starter freshman Brett Sullivan (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings and registered the win as the designated pitcher rule. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck out three.
Senior Justin Rebholz threw 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief before turning it over to sophomore Will Stephens, who just one hit over the final two innings to register the save. Senior Tyras Schisler worked one inning and allowed a run in his first appearance of the season.
Sophomore Pat Clare (0-1) started and was charged with six runs in 1/3 inning and took the loss.
Coast Guard is back in action on Friday when the Bears host WPI in a NEWMAC game at 3:30.
