Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Davis Mikell had a single, double, triple and drove in two runs and senior Steven Jurkiewicz allowed just four hits and one run while striking out eight over six innings in his season debut leading Castleton to a 9-2 win over Coast Guard in a non-conference game.
Sophomore Matt Jackson also had three hits in the win for Castleton (3-2) in the win while sophomore Dillon Benham added two hits.
Castleton batted around and scored five runs in the second as Jackson got the Spartans on the board with an RBI single and later in the inning back-to-back two out, two-run singles by sophomore Deagan Poland and Benham for the 5-0 lead.
The Spartans added another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Mikell pushing the lead to 6-0.
Coast Guard got on the board in the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore Jake Behne making the score 6-1.
Freshman Josh Nguyen-Domingo made his collegiate debut on the mound as he came on in relief with the bases loaded and nobody out in the sixth and got a pair of ground balls including a double play to get out of the jam.
Mikell had an RBI triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Zach Bahan in the seventh to make the score 8-1 and the Spartans added and unearned run in the eighth.
Senior Timbo Duncan hit his team leading fourth homer of the year and 12th of his career, a solo shot in the ninth for Coast Guard. Senior Kyle Jackson and sophomore Trey Rittenhouse each added a pair of hits for the Bears while senior Brendan McNeil tripled in the loss.
Sophomore Walter Harris (0-2) worked the first five innings and took the loss for the Bears.
The Bears (6-8) are back in action tomorrow when they open conference play hosting MIT in a doubleheader with the game time changed to 10:00 am to try and beat the rain in the forecast.
