Bears Beat Rival Conn. College For First Time Since 2009

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Packy Witkowski had a game-high 27 points and classmate Justin Kane tied his career highs with 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds as Coast Guard snapped a 10 game losing streak in the series against host Conn. College with a 84-69 win over their New London rivals.

It was the Bears first win over Conn. College since a 73-60 in the 2009-10 season at the Manhattanville Tournament. Coast Guard is off to a 4-1 start for the second time in three years. The Camels drop to 4-3 on the young season.

Witkowski was 5 of 8 from 3-point range and connected on 11 of 16 from the floor in the win. It was the second double-double of the season and fifth of his career for Kane. Sophomore Noah Baldez added 13 points and junior Bryce Schroeder finished with a season-high 11 points in the win.  

The Bears shot 47.6 percent in the win (30-63) and made 10 of 21 from 3-point range while the Camels shot 44.8 from the floor (26-58) while hitting 8 of 24, but just 1 of 12 from behind the arc in the second half. 

Coast Guard led 49-44 at the half and both teams were slugglish to start the second half as Coast Guard scored the first five points before Conn. knocked down a pair of free throws with 15:04 left for its first points of the half as the Bears led 54-46.

The Camels cut the deficit to 58-55 with 11:27 left before the Bears used a 12-5 run capped on a trey by Witkowski to push the lead to 70-60 with 5:29 remaining and Coast Guard held on.

Junior David Labossiere was the only Camel in double figures, he finished with 26 points.

Conn. College jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game before Witkowski knocked down back-to-back treys to make the score 9-6 with 17:14 left in the half.

The Camels would make 8 of 12 from the floor to start the game including 4 of 6 from 3-point range for a 20-14 lead with 12:38 left in the first half.

Kane would knock down back-to-back treys as the Bears pulled even 20-20 with 11:27 left. Coast Guard would make 5 of its first 9 from behind the arc.

Conn. built a 32-24 lead with 6:41 left before the Bears ran off eight straight pulling even at 32-32 with 4:34 left to start a 12-1 run as Coast Guard took a 36-33 lead on a layup by Noah Baldez with 3:26 remaining.

Coast Guard led 49-44 at the break as both teams shot it well in the opening half. Conn. College shot 57.1 percent from the floor (16-28) and an even better 58.3 percent from 3-point range (7-12). Coast Guard hit 19 of 35 from the floor (54.3 percent) and connected on 6 of 12 from 3-point range.

The Bears are back in action when they host archrival Merchant Marine on Tuesday night at 6:30.
