Baldez Scores 31 in Bears Victory

NORTON, Mass. -  Five Coast Guard players scored in double figures as the Bears earned their second New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win of the season topping Wheaton 93-78 Saturday afternoon.

With the win Coast Guard improve to 6-12 overall and 2-6 in conference play. The Lyons lose their third game in a row falling to 9-10 on the season and 4-4 in the NEWMAC.

The Bears were led by junior Micah Baldez who scored a career high 31 points shooting 9-15 from the floor. Freshman Max Lampe scored 12 with five rebounds while classmate Patrick Witkowski added 12 points with four boards. Freshman Justin Kane was one rebound short of a double double scoring 10 points with nine rebounds. Freshman Noah Baldez added 12 points of his own.

Ryan Fogarty scored a team high 22 points for Wheaton on 7-12 shooting while Quinton Dale scored eight points with 13 rebounds. Liam Bruno added 14 points, three assists and four rebounds.

Early on in the game neither team could gain an advantage as Wheaton's Nick Geremia grabbed an offensive rebound and tied the game with a jumper at 10-10 with 13:46 to go in the first half.

The Bears pulled ahead after the early tie with a 12-2 run making the score 22-12 with just under 10:30 left in the opening stanza. Baldez led the way scoring seven of the team's 10 points in the run. 

Coast Guard continued to hold onto the lead at eight points with 5:02 to go in the half as senior Devon Zych knocked down two free throws for a 28-20 score.

The Lyon's tied the game for the first time since 10-10 when Fogarty made two from the charity stripe with 44 seconds left in the half making the score 35-35.

The Bears however went in to the locker room with a two point lead at 37-35 as sophomore Luke Daniels dropped in a layup with 25 seconds left for the final basket of the half. 

Coast Guard picked up where they left off in the first pushing the lead back to eight with just over 14 minutes to play when Witkowski took a pass from senior Adrian Chuquillangui and drained a three pointer for a 53-45 lead.

The Bears continued to lead through the second half and pushed the lead to their largest of the game at 14 when Baldez completed a three point play with a made free throw with 4:37 left in the game.

The lead continued to grow as Coast Guard pushed it all the way to 21 points wrapping up their first win since January 7th over Emerson.

The Bears shot a season high 55.2% (32-58) from the floor and were 7-20 (35.0%) from beyond the arc. Coast Guard turned 15 Wheaton turnovers into 15 points and also held a slight rebounding advantage (34-31).

The Lyons made 26-57 (45.6%) overall and were 44.4% (8-18) from three. 

Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday, February 1, when they host Clark University. Opening tip is 7:00 pm.
