NEW LONDON, Conn. - Coast Guard outscored Emerson 20-6 in the fourth quarter as the Bears came from behind for their second New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference  (NEWMAC) win of the season, 64-57.

With the win the Coast Guard improves to 4-13 overall and 2-7 in conference play. The Lions fall to 8-10 losing their seventh in a row and 2-7 in the NEWMAC.

The Bears were led by sophomore Micaela Martinelli who notched her first career double double with 14 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Junior Gill Gerton had a team high 15 points with eight boards while freshman Breanna Wood scored 11 points adding nine rebounds and six steals. 

Sophomore Charlie Boyle had a game high 16 points and nine rebounds while sophomore Natalie Busch came off the bench to score 12 points with three steals. Junior Maya Savino notched 11 points with seven rebounds and two steals.

Coast Guard ran out to an early 7-0 lead in the first period as Gerton turned a steal into two points with 8:01 left in the opening quarter.

The Bears continued to lead through the opening stanza ending the half on jumper by sophomore Johanna Moolenaar to make the first period score 20-15.

Coast Guard pushed the lead to nine with just over seven minutes to play in the first half when freshman Zoe Riis-Fallica found Gerton underneath for a layup giving the Bears a 29-17 lead.

Emerson began to chip away at the lead and got within two points to end the quarter as Busch knocked down two from the charity stripe making the halftime score 33-31.

The Lions controlled the third quarter taking their first lead of the game at 34-33 on a good three pointer by Savino with 8:34 left in the period. Emerson would push the lead to six to end the quarter with a 51-44 advantage.

At 5:35 in the fourth quarter the Lions would scored their final points of the game and with the score 57-52 in favor of Emerson, Coast Guard would finish the game on a 12-0 run for the 64-57 victory. 

The Bears shot 33.3% (24-72) from the floor and 4-22 (18.2%) from beyond the arc. Coast Guard held an advantage in points in the paint (28-18) and turned 26 Emerson turnovers into 22 points.

The Lions made 19-61 (31.1%) overall and shot 38.9% (7-18) from three. 

Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday, January 28, as they travel to Wellesley for a NEWMAC game at 2:00.
