#1 Babson's Hot Three-Point Shooting Too Much for Bears

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Joey Flannery had 21 of his game-high 29 points in the first half, grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and Babson made 18 three-pointers as the Beavers, the #1 team in the nation, beat Coast Guard 87-72 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Babson which was 0 for 10 from 3-point range in the first half of its game at MIT on Wednesday, knocked down 11 of 17 in the first half and finished 18 of 33 (54.5 percent) from behind the arc in the win.

With the win, Babson is now off to its best start in school history with a record of 16-1 overall while remaining a perfect 6-0 in the NEWMAC. The Beavers have won 17 straight NEWMAC games, the longest conference winning streak in Division III. Coast Guard drops to 5-11 overall and 1-5 in the conference.

Flannery had 21 points in the first half as he was 7 of 11 from the floor while hitting 5 of 6 from 3-point range in the opening half. He was 10 for 18 from the floor and made 7 of 10 from 3-point range.

Junior Nick Comanale added 19 points, senior Isaiah Nelsen (15) and senior Sam Bohmiller (12) to round out the double figure scorers for Babson. Senior Matt Droney had a game-high six assists for the Beavers.

Freshman Patrick Witkowski had a team-high 18 points while freshman Max Lampe (14), freshman Justin Kane and (11) sophomore Luke Daniels (11) were all in double figures for the Bears. Lampe had a career-high nine rebounds for Coast Guard.

Babson led 55-38 at halftime and used a 17-4 run to start the half taking a 72-42 lead with 14:53 left in the game. The Beavers were 4 of 5 from 3-point range in the run.

Coast Guard would answer by scoring 16 straight, nine of those by Witkowski, cutting the deficit to 72-58 with 9:19 left.

The Beavers shot 48.4 percent from the floor (31-64) while Coast Guard shot 36.3 percent (29-80) hitting just 6 of 25 from 3-point range. The Bears held a 50-37 edge on the glass with a season-high 19 offensive rebounds.

Freshman Noah Baldez knocked down a 3-pointer with 12:40 left in the first half and Coast Guard trailed 19-17 before Flannery made a trio of 3-pointers in a 14-4 run as the Beavers took a 33-21 lead with 9:45 left.

The Beavers would score the final six points of the half to lead 55-38 at the break.

Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday night when the Bears travel to WPI for a 7:00 tip.
