Mass. Maritime Quiets Bears Bats

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Four pitchers combined to allow just four Coast Guard hits as Mass. Maritime beat the Bears 5-1 in a non-conference game.

Senior Kevin Kwedor allowed just two hits and struck out five over six innings to get the win for the Bucs, who improved to 8-8 on the season while the Bears drop to 8-12 overall.

Sophomore Connor Kennedy led the Mass. Maritime offense with three of the team's eight hits while driving in a pair of runs in the win.

Freshman Luke Thompson had the Bears only extra base hit of the day, a double.

Freshman Walter Harris (2-2) was the tough luck loser as he pitched six solid innings allowing just four hits and a pair of earned runs while walking two and fanning five.

The Bears got on the board in the fifth on an RBI single by senior Cory Sonnega to break the scoreless tie.

Mass. Maritime scored twice in the sixth and twice in the seventh for a 4-1 lead before adding an insurance run in the ninth to close the scoring.

Sophomore Zach Serna and junior Timbo Duncan accounted for the Bears other two hits in the loss.

Coast Guard is back in action on Friday when the Bears host Springfield in the first game of a three-game weekend series at 3:30.
