WPI Wins Series Opener in Bottom of Ninth

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Vinny D'Ambrosio's RBI single with one out in the bottom of the ninth lifted WPI to a 3-2 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

WPI improves to 19-8 overall and 7-3 in the NEWMAC while Coast Guard drops to 11-15 overall and 3-5 in league play.

In the bottom of the ninth, DJ Ouellette was hit by a pitch, Steven Gallagher singled and then pinch hitter Kyle Opiekun was intentionally walked to load the bases before D'Ambrosio's winning hit.

WPI got on the board in the fourth when Alex Vendetti led off with a walk moved to second on another walk, was bunted to third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sean Greene for a 1-0 lead.

The Bears answered right back in the top of the fifth as junior Kyle Jackson led off with a double, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Mark Behne to tie the game 1-1.

The Engineers regained the lead in the sixth when John Mulready led off with a double moved to third on a bunt single by Anthony Capuano and Matt Breidenbach, running for Mulready scored on a ground out double play for a 2-1 lead.

Coast Guard tied it in the eighth as senior Cory Sonnega led off with a single advanced to second and third on ground outs before an RBI single by freshman Will Stephens pulled the Bears even 2-2.

Mike Vaitkanus pitched eight solid innings for WPI allowing six hits and two earned runs while not walking a batter and striking out five.

Drew Galinis pitched a hitless ninth and picked up the win in relief.

Junior Colton Cannon went six innings and allowed four hits and two earned runs while walking four and striking out four.

Freshman Dan Finn (2-2) pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and allowed three hits and a run to take the loss.

The teams complete the three-game weekend series with a doubleheader at Coast Guard on Saturday beginning at noon.
