MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Junior Nick Micelli came on in relief and allowed just two hits over the final 4 1/3 innings as Wesleyan beat Coast Guard 11-5 in a non-conference game.

The Cardinals improved to 10-3 on the season while Coast Guard dropped its fifth straight to fall to 6-9 overall.

The Bears got on the board in the first on an RBI single by senior Kyle Wood before Wesleyan got two in the first and one more in the second for a 3-1 lead.

Trailing 4-1, Coast Guard took the lead with four runs in the fifth on just one hit as the Bears took advantage of four straight walks including bases loaded walks to sophomore Christian Toscano and senior Cory Sonnega for a 5-4 lead. Sophomore Zach Serna had the only hit of the inning, an RBI single.

The host Cardinals took the lead for good on a two-out, two-run double by Marco Baratta in the fifth for a 6-5 lead. Wesleyan would score three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to close the scoring.

Freshman Dustin Reeder (0-1) made his first career start and worked six innings allowing seven hits and six runs. He did not walk a batter while striking out seven in taking the loss.

Freshman Luke Thompson, Serna and Wood each had two hits to lead the Bears. Wood reached base four times as he also reached on a walk and he was hit by a pitch. Senior Mark Behne walked three times.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday when the open conference play with a doubleheader at MIT at noon.
