Conn. College Beats Bears

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Liz Malman was one of three players in double figures as she finished with a team-high 12 points leading Connecticut College to an 84-68 win over host Coast Guard in a non-conference game between the two New London schools.

Junior Mairead Hynes added 11 points while sophomore Payton Ouimette finished with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds in the win for Conn. College. Freshman Sami Ashton added a game-high six assists for the Camels.

Conn. College won its third straight to improve to 6-1 while the Bears dropped their fourth straight to dip to 2-4 on the season.

Junior Gill Gerton led the Bears with a game-high 15 points and nine rebounds.

Senior Amanda Roy finished with 12 points, all in the second half, as she made a career-high four 3-pointers while freshman Zoe Riis-Fallica had a career-high 11 points, all in the first half, for the Bears. Freshman Laura Irish was also in double figures with 10 points for Coast Guard.

Conn. College shot 45.1 percent from the field (32-71) while making 10 of 21 from behind the arc. Coast Guard shot 32 percent (24-75) and the Bears were 9 of 24 from 3-point range.

Conn. College jumped out to a 7-2 lead with 7:15 left in the first quarter and maintained that lead throughout the quarter and scored the final six points of the quarter for a 24-15 lead after one.

The Bears knocked down a pair of 3-pointers by Gerton and Riis-Fallica in the first minute of the second quarter cutting the deficit to 24-21 with 9:03 left in the half. Conn. College would however answer with an 11-0 run capped on a basket by Malman with 6:24 left for a 35-21 lead. The Camels led 50-33 at halftime.

Conn. shot 52.8 percent in the first half (19-36) and made 5 of 12 from 3-point range while the Bears were 13 of 42 from the floor (31 percent) in the first half including 5 of 14 from behind the arc.

The Camels would start the second half on a 14-2 run to open up at 64-35 lead with 5:52 left in the third quarter. Conn. College led 74-49 after three quarters.

Coast Guard is back in action on Monday night at Trinity at 7:00.
