Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Angelou Dunton had ten kills and eight digs leading Coast Guard to a 3-1 win over Wheaton in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match.
The Bears, who have won four of their last five, improve to 11-9 overall and 4-3 in the conference while Wheaton, which has dropped four of its last five, slips to 9-12 overall and 2-5 in the NEWMAC.
Coast Guard won by game scores of 25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 25-18.
Senior Susan West added nine kills and a match-high four blocks while sophomore Hailye Reynolds had a team-high 11 digs in the win. Freshman Makenna Martin had a match-high 35 assists for the Bears.
Wheaton led in the first game 8-7 before the Bears rolled off five straight for a 12-8 lead. Coast Guard led 21-18 before the Lyons closed to 21-20. Coast Guard scored four of the final four points as junior Madison Scott had back-to-back aces before a kill from West gave the Bears the 25-21 win.
In game two, Wheaton took command scoring eight straight turning an 8-6 lead into a 16-6 edge. The Bears would get as close as five at 22-17 before the Lyons scored the final three points for the 25-17 win.
The Lyons took an early 8-5 lead in the third game before Coast Guard ran off six straight and ten of the next 12 points to take a 15-10 lead. Coast Guard led 24-19 before the Lyons fought off four straight game points cutting the deficit to 24-23 before a kill by West gave the Bears the 25-23 win.
Coast Guard scored five straight to take an 11-6 lead in the fourth game and maintained that lead the rest of the way winning 25-18.
Junior Allison Cox had a match-high 12 kills to lead the Lyons while sophomore Cathryn MacGregor finished with ten kills and a match-high 12 digs. Freshman Becca Houghton led the way with 31 assists.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they host a tri-meet with Anna Maria and Nichols. Coast Guard will play Anna Maria at 11:00 and Nichols at 3:00.
