Bears Fall at Conn. College

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Bo McKinley was 6 of 7 from 3-point range and finished with a season-high 20 points leading host Connecticut College to a 112-81 win over Coast Guard in the battle of New London schools.

McKinley, starting for the injured Lee Messier, was averaging 6.8 points per game and had made seven 3-pointers this season entering the game. He was 7 of 10 from the floor including 6 of 7 from behind the arc in the win. He was one of five players in double figures for the Camels, who shot 60.9 percent from 3-point range (14 of 23) in the win.

The Camels improved to 7-3 on the season while Coast Guard dropped its third straight to dip to 6-4 on the season.

Conn. College took control of the game as the Camels used a 15-2 run to start the second half turning a 49-44 lead at the break into a 64-46 lead with 15:09 left.

The Bears trailed 71-56 with 12:33 left before the Camels ran off 15 straight over the next four minutes taking a commanding 86-56 lead.

Junior Adrian Chuquillangui was one of five Coast Guard players in double figures with 15 points while sophomore Micah Baldez (13), senior Ricky Rodriguez (12), sophomore Ethan Boose (10) and freshman Nolan Benson (10) also scored in double figures for the Bears.

The Bears shot 40.9 percent from the floor (27 of 66) and made 9 of 22 from 3-point range.

The Camels used a 12-3 turning turning a 23-21 deficit into a 33-26 lead following a thundering dunk by freshman David Labossiere with 7:41 left in the first half.

Coast Guard would respond with an 11-3 run with senior Ricky Rodriguez scoring the final five of the run as the Bears regained the lead 37-36 with 5:36 left in the half.

Conn. College scored six straight late in the first half to push the lead back to seven at 49-42 before a bucket by Alvarez made the score 49-44 at halftime.

McKinley was 5 of 6 from 3-point range in the first half leading the way with 17 points while Rowe added 13 in the opening half. 

Rodriguez led the Bears with 12 first half points.

Coast Guard was 15 of 33 from the floor in the first half (45.5 percent) while making 6 of 10 from behind the arc.  Conn. College shot 54.1 percent in the first half (20-37) and made 8 of 15 from behind the arc.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday night when they open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at Wheaton at 6 p.m.
