Coast Guard's Upset Bid Falls Short

BABSON PARK, Mass. - Senior Kevin Alvarez tied his career-high with 30 points, but the Bears came up just short as they fell to the Beavers 100-90 in overtime.

Alvarez added six rebounds and five assists to go with his game-high 30 points. Sophomore Ethan Boose had 26 points and 16 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. Sophomore Micah Baldez scored 16 points while sophomore Darius Adams had 12 rebounds and eight points.

Junior Joey Flannery led Babson with 26 points. Junior Isaiah Nelsen added 22 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Nick Comenale added 14 points and seven assists.

Babson got off to a quick start as they ran out to a 13-2 lead behind six points from Nelsen just under five minutes into the game.

Coast Guard answered in a big way going on a 16-3 run to take a 18-16 lead after Alvarez completed the three point play with 9:49 left in the first half.

The Bears took their biggest lead of the first as senior Ricky Rodriguez drained a three pointer giving Coast Guard a four point lead at 29-25 with 5:51 left in the half.

The Beavers closed out the first half on a 17-7 run, behind 10 points from Flannery giving Babson a 42-36 lead going into the second half.

Boose and Alvarez combined for 23 of the Bears 36 points in the first half with Boose also collecting nine rebounds. Coast Guard took advantage of timely rebounding as they outscored Babson 11-0 on second chance opportunities.

It was back and forth at the start of the second as both teams traded baskets in the early going. The Bears made the first push of the half as they took a five point lead at 57-52 with 13:53 to go in regulation. 

Babson cut into Coast Guard's lead and took a four point lead on a three pointer by junior Charlie Rice at 78-74 with 5:27 left in the second half.

Babson led by as many as five points twice the rest of the way until senior Ricky Rodriguez banked in a three pointer with one second on the shot clock making the score 85-83 with just over a minute left.

After trading free throws the Bears had the ball with under 20 second left. Junior Adrian Chuquillanqui took a three pointer from the corner that bounced out but Adams skied for the rebounds and laid it back in to tie the game at 86-86 and push it to overtime.

The extra period however belonged to the Beavers as they out scored Coast Guard 14-4 to take a thrilling 100-90 victory.

Coast Guard was 32-76 (42.1%) from the floor and 32% (8-25) from beyond the arc. The Bears made every offensive rebound count as they outscored Babson 30-0 on second chance points.

Babson shot 56.3% (36-64) overall and 9-18 (50%) from three. The Beavers bench came up big for them outscoring the Bears bench 24-8. 

Bears are back in action on Wednesday, January 27th when they host WPI in NEWMAC action.Tip off is 5:30 pm.They are the first game of a double header with the women taking on Smith at 7:30 to end the night.
