Bears Fall to MIT in NEWMAC Semifinals

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Second-seeded MIT won two of the three doubles matches and won the first three singles matches to beat third-seeded Coast Guard 5-1 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament at Babson.

The Bears advanced to the semifinals of the NEWMAC tournament for the third time in four years and finish the season 8-7.

Robert Renfrow and Michael Melampy posted an 8-4 win at #2 doubles while the Bears #1 doubles team of Mark Guentert and Weston Fortna dropped tough 9-8 decision losing 7-4 in the tiebreaker.

Renfrow lost 2-6, 6-1,6-1 at # singles, Fortna lost 6-1, 6-2 at #3 singles and Melampy lost 6-4, 6-1 at #4 singles giving MIT five points to end the match.

John Hu won the first set 7-5 at #5 singles and was trailing 4-1 in the second set while Guentert dropped the first set 6-3, but led 5-4 in the second set at #2 singles.

Benson Errington dropped the first set 7-6 and led 5-1 in set two at #6 singles before the match was clinched by the Engineers, who will play top-seeded Babson for the NEWMAC Championship tomorrow.
