Coast Guard Earns Second NEWMAC Win of the Season

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Colton Cannon scattered five hits over eight innings as the Bears earned their second NEWMAC win of the season defeating the Pride 6-1.

With the win Coast Guard continues with their best start in school history pushing their record to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the NEWMAC.

Junior Mark Behne was 1-4 with two RBI's and a run scored while sophomore Tim Duncan was 1-4 with a double and one RBI. Juniors Ed Lazowski and Cory Sonnega along with sophomore Brendan McNeil each added RBI's of their own.

Freshman Alex Murdoch was 2-4 pushing his season average to .429. He is now fourth in the conference in batting average.

Springfield (1-11, 0-5) freshman Mark Joao would score the Pride's only run by hitting a solo homerun to left field in the bottom of the eighth. Only three players would register a hit for Springfield with Joao going 2-3, senior Brent Poulin also going 2-3, and sophomore Adam Zandri rounding it out going 1-3.

The Bears would jump out from the get go as they scored four runs in the top of the fourth.  With two outs McNeil would single to center field plating senior Matt Hanks. Behne came up next and singled to left scoring junior Kyle Wood. McNeil would score on a throwing error, and Behne would advance to third. Lazowski would finish the inning singling past shortstop senior Shane O'Leary scoring Behne.

Coast Guard tacked on another run in the top of the second with two outs as Duncan doubled to left field bringing senior Matt Hanks across to give the Bears a 5-0 lead.

Sonnega would drive in Coast Guard's final run of the game as he singled to center field in the top of the fourth scoring Lazowski.

Joao would hit his first career homerun in the bottom of the eighth as he hit a lined shot off of Cannon making the score 6-1. The game would be called due to rain before the start of the ninth.

Cannon would throw a complete game giving up one earned run, five hits, and striking out four bringing his record to 1-1 on the season.  Cannon has a 2.29 era on the season which is fourth in the conference.

Senior Mike DeMille went three innings giving up ten hits and five earned runs taking the loss and bring his season record to 0-2. Seniors Matt Butrym and Jon Medici would relieve DeMille throwing five innings of no hit ball.

Both teams return to Coast Guard tomorrow, April, 4th for a Saturday double header. The first game will start at noon.
