Bears Fall at Mass. Maritime

Box Score

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Daniel Avery scattered three hits and struck out a career-high 11 over six innings of work to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 6-2 non-league college baseball victory over Coast Guard Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.

The host Buccaneers (17-10) grabbed an early 1-0 lead in their first at-bat when senior Bobby Rosano doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Logan Sullo, and Massachusetts Maritime extended that margin to 4-0 in the fifth on Sullo's RBI double that was sandwiched by a run-scoring infield single off the bat of sophomore Terrence Mudie and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jake Petruzzelli.

The visiting Bears (16-15) got on the board in the sixth on an RBI groundout by senior Blake Thompson, but the hosts got that run back in the bottom of the frame on freshman William Keane's run-scoring fielder's choice before closing out their scoring in the seventh on junior Everett Walsh's RBI single.

Coast Guard plated its other run of the day in the ninth, as junior Mark Behne singled, stole second and scored on sophomore Mike Jeffko's single to account for the final margin.

Mudie collected three hits on the day for Massachusetts Maritime, while Walsh rapped out a pair as part of an eight-hit Buccaneer attack. Avery struck out 10 of 13 batters faced in a four-plus inning stretch, as he threw 69 of his 98 pitches for strikes in improving to 2-0 on the season for the hosts, who have won seven of their last eight outings.

Behne and Jeffko each had two of Coast Guard's eight hits in the setback, as freshman Joe Siciliano allowed five hits and a pair of earned runs over the first five innings to fall to 2-3 on the mound for the Bears.

Justin Rebholz gave up three hits and an earned run in two innings of relief whlie Cody Bain pitched a scoreless ninth for the Bears.

Coast Guard closes out its 2015 season tomorrow afternoon by heading to Norwich to take on Mitchell in a non-league match-up at Dodd Stadium that begins at 3:00 p.m.
