Bears Fall to Mitchell

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman southpaw Bryton Ferris allowed just four hits and one earned run and struck out seven over 7 2/3 innings as Mitchell beat Coast Guard 9-2 in a non-conference game played at the Coast Guard Academy, the Bears final home game of the season.

Ferris improved to 4-0 as Mitchell won its sixth straight and the Mariners are now 21-3 on the season while Coast Guard drops to 14-12.

Coast Guard struck first in the third inning as senior Matt Hanks singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a fielding error.

Mitchell broke the game open with six runs on five hits in the fourth inning. Senior Kenneth Olszewski tied the game with an RBI triple and scored on a passed ball for a 2-1 lead.

Senior Ryan Goodwin added an RBI double, sophomore Tyler Pina had an RBI single and senior Peter McTernan added a sacrifice fly for a 6-1 lead.

The Mariners added three more in the sixth with back-to-back  RBI doubles from senior Gavin LaLima and freshman Kyle Hartenstein before an RBI single by senior Evan Peck made its 9-1.

Coast Guard got its final run in the eighth on an RBI single by sophomore Brendan McNeil scoring junior Mark Behne, who walked.

Freshman Evan McClain threw 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief with one strikeout for Mitchell.

Freshman Joe Siciliano (2-2) was touched for six hits and six runs – four earned – over the first four innings and he took the loss.

Senior Dylan Wright allowed three unearned runs and three hits in two innings work  while senior Blake Thompson threw a pair of scoreless innings allowing just one hit. Sophomore Tyras Schisler threw a hitless ninth while a recording a strikeout for the Bears.

LaLima had three hits and two RBI's to lead Mitchell while Hartenstein added two hits in the win.

The season all comes down to a pair of games tomorrow. Coast Guard will play Emerson at 5 p.m. at Victory Field in Watertown, Mass. while Babson will play at Clark at 3:30.

Coast Guard needs to win and also have Babson beat Clark for the Bears to secure the fifth and final spot in the NEWMAC tournament which begins on Friday at Babson.
