Coast Guard Drops Final NEWMAC Game of the Season

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Coast Guard came back from a 7-1 deficit making it 8-7 going into the second half but could not complete the comeback as they fell to Smith 16-10 in NEWMAC competition.

With the loss the Bears record drops to 3-11 on the season and 0-7 in the NEWMAC. The Pioneers earned their first NEWMAC win of the season bringing their overall record to 4-11 and their conference record to 1-6.

Junior Kaitlin Dickson had two goals and assists leading all Bears with three points. Senior Holly Moore, sophomore Niki Kruger, and freshman Cecelia Hosley each had two goals. Senior Ruby Surgent added a goal and an assist.

Senior Jessica Lilquist had a game high six goals and one assist and junior Rachel Silveria had a four goals and two assists. Senior Petru Bester scored three goals and senior Jenny Estes added three points with two goals and an assist. 

It was 1-1 under four minutes into the game as Lilquist and Moore traded early goals. 

Smith then looked like they were going to run away with the game as they scored six straight goals to make the score 7-1. Bester had two goals over this stretch along with four different Pioneers goal scorers. 

The Bears came storming back with six of the next seven goals. Dickson scored two goals during this run and Surgent had a goal and an assist. Senior Lucy Daghir, Moore, and Hosley each scored goals of their own making the score going in the second half 8-7.

Only 18 seconds into the second half Smith took the momentum back as Estes took a pass from freshman Julia Hamilton for her second goal of the game. 

The Pioneers scored five more goals before Coast Guard could find the back of the net again taking a 14-7 lead. Kruger stopped the bleeding at the 14:42 mark and then again at the 11:53 cutting Smith's lead to five. 

Before the Bears could continue their comeback Lilquist netted two goals to push the lead back to seven. Hosley scored once more with 49 seconds left to make the final score 16-10.

Freshman Angel Fay made six saves on 22 shots faced dropping her season record to 3-11. Fay is fourth in the league with 123 saves on the season. 

Freshman Sidney Price played the majority of the game for the Pioneers 12 saves on 21 shots faced. Price is first in the NEWMAC with 169 saves on the season. 

Coast Guard returns to action on Tuesday, April, 21st as they travel to Kings Point, New York, for their final game of the season against arch rival Merchant Marine. Game time is 6:00 pm.
