Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Justin Pedley and Matt Redfield each had 20 points and MIT shot 57.7 percent from the floor as the Engineers beat Coast Guard 78-58 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
MIT improves to 15-5 overall and 8-2 in conference play while the Bears drop to 6-15 overall and 2-8 in NEWMAC play.
Redfield had a double-double as he finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds for MIT.
Junior Kevin Alavarez had the first double-double of his career as he led the Bears with 19 points and 12 rebounds while senior David Anderson added 16 points.
Coast Guard hung with the favored Engineers for first 15 minutes of the first game as the game was tied 22-22 with 4:58 remaining before MIT ran off 12 straight to take a 34-22 lead with 2:08 left in the half. MIT led 38-27 at halftime.
The Bears came out of the gate fast in second half and got right back in the game by hitting MIT with a 11-2 run cutting the deficit to 40-38 with 16:01 left in the game.
Justin Pedley's 3-pointer capped a 7-0 run as MIT took a comfortable 51-40 lead with 11:58 left and the Bears would not get closer than ten the rest of the way.
MIT was 30 of 52 from the floor and 4 of 14 from behind the arc while the Bears shot 31.2 percent from the field (20 of 64) while making 5 of 15 from 3-point range. Coast Guard outrebounded the much bigger Engineers 40-35 including 17 offensive rebounds, five by Alvarez.
Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday when the Bears travel to Emerson for a key NEWMAC game at 7 p.m.
