Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Sean Martin had a game-high 20 points including the 1,000th of his career leading Springfield to a 73-51 win over Coast Guard in the regular season finale and Senior Day at the Academy.
The Pride, which have won nine of their last ten, improve to 18-7 overall and 10-4 in the NEWMAC while Coast Guard finishes the season 6-19 overall and 2-12 in conference play.
Martin was 5 for 8 from the floor and a perfect 10 for 10 from the foul line in scoring his 20 points to finish with 1,000 points exactly. Senior Nick Sienkiewicz added 17 points while junior Larry Piretra had a game-high 11 rebounds in the win for the Pride.
Springfield jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game before the Bears responded with eight straight to tie the game 8-8 on a 3-pointer by junior Kevin Alvarez with 13:22 left in the first half.
The Pride would then score 11 of the next 13 points taking a 19-10 following a layup by junior Alex Garstka with 10:09 left in the half.
Springfield led 32-22 at halftime as Martin led the way with 14 first half points while Piretra had ten rebounds in the first half.
Alvarez led the Bears with 12 points in the opening half.
Coast Guard would make just a pair of field goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half as Springfield pushed the lead to 57-30 on Martins' 1,000th point with 9:02 left.
Springfield shot 46.3 percent from the floor while making 3 of 17 from 3-point range. Coast Guard was 18 of 58 from the field (31 percent) and made 5 of 19 from behind the arc.
Alvarez led Coast Guard with 15 points to go with six rebounds while senior David Anderson had a huge second half and finished with his third double-double of the season and 12th of his career as he had 14 points and ten rebounds. He had 12 points and seven rebounds in the second half. Anderson finishes his career with 912 points and 498 rebounds.
