Conn. Remains Unbeaten With Win over Bears

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Mairead Hynes led all scorers with 26 points to go with her game-high 13 rebounds leading host Connecticut College to a 75-50 win over Coast Guard in the battle of the two New London schools.

The Camels remain unbeaten improving to 7-0 on the season while the Bears drop to 4-4 overall.

Senior Meghan Fornaro moved from sixth on the Bears all-time scoring list to fourth as she passed both Jessica Owsiany ('99) and Tessa Mueller ('03) finishing the night with a team-high 20 points and five assists to give her 1,118 career points.

Hynes scored the first six points of the second half to cap an 11-0 run for the Camels as they opened up a 37-25 lead with 8:13 left. They would push the lead to as many as 16 at 49-33 with 2:12 left in the third quarter before Fornaro knocked down consecutive treys to close it to 49-39 with 1:26 remaining in the quarter. The Camels led 53-41 after three quarters and Conn. put the game away with an 18-2 run to start the fourth.

Freshman Micaela Martinelli had a career-high 11 points, she had just seven total points in the first six games of her career entering the night. Senior Torie Sutherland, who was held to a season-low two points before fouling out, led the Bears with seven rebounds.

The Bears shot 35.2 percent from the field (19-54) and made eight of 20 from behind the arc while Conn. was 30 of 66 from the floor (45.5 percent) and 58.1 percent (18-1) in the second half. The Camels were 5 of 20 from 3-point range.

The Camels held a 41-34 edge on the boards, the Bears were hurt by 25 turnovers.

Coast Guard led 9-5 with 2:28 left in the first quarter when Fornaro and Hynes would then take over for their respective teams.

Fornaro would score the Bears next eight points while Hynes accounted for the Camels next 12 points as Conn. pulled even 17-17 with 6:55 left in the first half.

Freshman Kylie Caouotte made back-to-back buckets to cap an 8-0 run giving the Camels their first lead of the game 21-17 with 5:24 left in the half.

A layup by freshman Payton Ouimette capped a 13-2 run as Conn. College took a 26-19 lead with 2:47 left in the second quarter.

Martinelli would make her first two collegiate 3-pointers to pull the Bears to 26-25 with 1:41 left before the Camels scored the final five points of the half to lead 31-25 at the break.

The Camels were 12 of 35 from the floor in the first half (34.3 percent) while making 2 of 11 from behind the arc. Coast Guard shot 32.3 percent in the opening half (10-31) making 4 of 10 from 3-point range.

The Bears are off through the holidays and return to action on Dec. 28th against Simpson at noon EST in Puerto Rico.
