Box Score NORTON, Mass. – Senior Rebecca Arnone had a game-high 25 points leading Wheaton to a 64-49 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
The Lyons improve to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play while the Bears suffer their first conference loss of the season dropping to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the NEWMAC.
Senior Torie Sutherland had her third double-double of the season and 14th of her career as she grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds to go with 13 points in the loss.
Senior Meghan Fornaro also had 13 points as she moved into sixth place on the Coast Guard all-time scoring list passing Heather Wolf ('99), who had 1,097 points. Fornaro finished the game with 1,098 career points.
The Bears made just 3 of 32 from behind the arc and shot a season-low 29.6 percent (21 of 71) in the game.
Wheaton jumped out to a 7-2 lead and led by as many as six at 14-8 with 2:03 remaining in the first quarter and the Lyons led 14-10 after one.
Fornaro capped a 6-0 Bears run with a layup with 8:56 left in the first half to tie the game 14-14. Wheaton would respond with eight straight taking a 22-14 lead with 4:13 left on a layup by Sophie Black. Coast Guard would score of the final eight points in the second quarter and trailed 24-20 at the break.
The Bears were just 9 of 33 from the field (27.3 percent) in the first half and they missed all 11 3-point attempts in the first half. Wheaton shot 32.3 percent (10 of 31) from the floor and just one of eight from behind the arc.
Wheaton pushed the lead to eight, 35-27 with 3:44 left in the third quarter before the Bears ran off six straight capped on a free throw by sophomore Gill Gerton to make the scored 35-33 with 1:24 left. The Lyons led 37-34 after three quarters.
The Lyons used a 7-0 run to start the fourth quarter taking a 44-34 lead with 8:46 left in the game. Back-to-back treys by sophomore Jill Bray and Sutherland made the score 44-40 with 7:50 left.
Wheaton would used a 9-3 spurt taking a 53-43 lead with 4:24 left to put the game away.
Coast Guard is back in action Tuesday night in a non-conference game at their neighbors Conn. College with tip set for 7:30. It will be the Bears first game in New London as Coast Guard plays its first ten games on the road.
