Boose Leads Balanced Attack in Home Opening Win

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Ethan Boose had career-high 18 points leading six Bears in double figures as Coast Guard won its home opener beating Salve Regina 98-89 in a non-conference game.

Sophomore Devin Zych career-highs with 11 points and nine rebounds, freshman Luke Daniels had a career-high ten points while Kevin Alvarez had 14 points and a career-high seven assists. Sophomore Darius  Adams (12) and classmate Micah Baldez (11) also scored in double figures for Coast Guard which starts the season 2-0 for the first time since 2007-08 season.

Senior Mark Krebs added nine points and a career-best ten rebounds as Coast Guard outrebounded the Seahawks 49-29.

Senior Barrett Hanlon led all scorers with 29 points to go with a game-high eight assists for Salve while junior Nicholas Bates finished with 21 points. Hanlon and Bates each had a team-high eight rebounds for the Seahawks.

It was a back-and-forth first half as the biggest lead of opening stanza was six by Salve Regina, 29-23 following a layup by Hanlon with 6:36 left before the Bears scored eight straight for a 31-29 lead with 4:58 left in the half. Coast Guard led 40-39 at the break.

Coast Guard used a 7-0 run turning a 66-65 lead into a 73-65 edge with 6:56 left in the game. The Bears would take their largest lead of the game, 83-73 on a 3-pointer by junior Adrian Chuquillangui with 3:54 left .

The Bears would go 7 for 8 from the free throw line in the final minute with Baldez going 5 for 6 to ice the game.

Coast Guard shot 36-68 (52.9%) from the floor and made 2 of 7 from beyond the arc. Coast Guard outrebounded Salve Regina 49-29. The Bears bench came up big as they outscored the Salve Regina reserves 45-15.

The Seahawks shot 45.2% (33-73) and were 4-12 from from three. Salve Regina had a season high 11 steals and forced 19 Coast Guard turnovers that they turned into 20 points.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they travel to the Bronx, New York to take on Lehman College. Tip off is 1:00 pm.
