Big Second Half Leads Wheaton Past Coast Guard

NORTON, Mass. –  Junior Billy Battaglia had 19 of his game-high 26 points in the second half leading Wheaton to a 80-68 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Coast Guard led 48-45 with 9:47 left before Wheaton went on a 13-0 run as Battaglia knocked down consecutive 3-pointers and scored ten points in the run as Wheaton took its largest lead of the game to that point 58-48 with 7:12 left.

Battaglia was 4 for 6 from 3-point range in the second half and 5 for 9 from behind the arc in the game.

The Lyons snap a nine-game losing streak and pickup their first conference win of the season to improve to 4-14 overall and 1-7 in the NEWMAC while the Bears dropped their seventh straight to dip to 5-14 overall and 1-7 in the conference.

Kevin Alvarez led Coast Guard with 13 points while David Anderson, Micah Baldez and Mark Krebs each finished with 11 points. It was a career-high 11 points for both Baldez and Krebs. Darius Adams, Alvarez and Anderson led the Bears with seven rebounds each.

Mike O'Loughlin added 19 points while Ryan Fogarty added 13 points in the win for Wheaton. Eddie Capstick added eight points and a game-high eight assists for the Lyons. Zach Parsons and O'Loughlin led Wheaton with seven boards.

The first half which featured 11 lead changes saw Coast Guard take the largest lead of the half 28-23 after scoring six straight capped on a bucket by senior Eli Sponseller with 2:40 to go, but the Lyons would score the final four points of the half cutting the deficit to 28-27 at the break.

Wheaton's biggest lead of the first half was 19-15 with 10:28 left following back-to-back 3-pointers by O'Loughlin and Battaglia.

The Bears shot 37.7 percent from the floor (23 for 61) while making 6 of 17 from 3-point range (35.3 percent) while Wheaton was 26 of 67 from the field (38.8 percent) hitting 9 of 23 from behind the arc (39.1 percent).

Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday night when the Bears host Clark in a NEWMAC game beginning at 5:30 p.m.
