#20 Babson Holds Off Bears

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Joey Flannery led four players in double figures with a game-high 21 points leading Babson, ranked 20th nationally, to a 81-73 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

John Wickey (17), Eric Dean (14) and Sam Bohmiller (10) also scored in double figures for Babson in the win while Dean had a game-high ten rebounds to register a double-double in the win.

Babson won its third straight to improve to 15-2 overall and 5-1 in the NEWMAC while Bears dropped their fifth straight and are now 5-12 overall and 1-5 in the conference.

Freshman Darius Adams led Coast Guard with 17 points while senior Eli Sponseller and junior Ricky Rodriguez each added 11 points. David Anderson finished with ten points. Adams and Anderson each had seven rebounds to lead the Bears.

The Beavers, who led 41-30 at halftime, led 45-36 with 17:01 left and went on a 10-1 run pushing their lead to 55-37 with 14:51 remaining in the game.

Babson led by as many as 21, 74-53 with 6:34 left before a late Coast Guard 17-3 run cut the deficit to 77-70 with 42 seconds left.

Coast Guard took a 9-8 lead on a 3-pointer by Rodriguez with 15:24 left in the first half before the Bears went cold from the floor making just one field goal in close to ten minutes as the Beavers outscored Coast Guard 20-4 to take a commanding 28-13 lead with 6:45.

Junior Kevin Alvarez's basket with 5:19 left in the half made the score 28-15 it was the Bears first basket since the Rodriguez triple with 15:24 left in the first half.

The Bears finished 23-51 from the field (45.1 percent) while making 7 of 21 from behind the arc while Babson shot 46.4 percent from the floor (26 for 56) and made 8 of 17 from 3-point range.

Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday when they play at WPI in a NEWMAC game  at 7 p.m.
