Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Coast Guard women's volleyball team knocked off Merchant Marine 3-2 in a back and forth match at Merriman Gymnasium. With the 25-27, 27-25, 21-25, 25-20, 12-15 victory the Bears push their record to 6-2 while the Mariners fall to 7-1.
Sophomore Susan West registered a team high 15 kills and junior Ashley Dumont had 11 kills hitting at a .222 clip. Junior Maggie Hine lead Coast Guard with a match high .400 hitting average on ten attempts. Freshman Emma Saunders also factored into the decision hitting at a .312 average. Coast Guard attacked at a positive rate for the entire match.
Hine's also lead the Bears in assists with a team high 27 while freshman Michelle Hernandez followed with 14 assists of her own. Freshman Michelle McGill had a match high 22 digs with Hernandez and Hines having 15 and 12, respectively.
Merchant Marine seniors Jennifer Perkins, Cassandra Palma, and Michelle Danhof led the Mariners in kills with 17, 14, and 14. Freshman Kayla Gleason had a match high 44 assists and 22 digs.
Coast Guard head coach Aylene Ilkson commented on the rivalry game saying, "today was a great day to carry on a tradition of winning for our volleyball program. It was a hard fought team victory with a ton of people contributing."
Coach Ilkson went on to say, "Although I do not feel we played our best volleyball I am happy with the gritty and relentless spirit our team showed and how they were committed to playing for each other and the Academy."
Coast Guard returns to action with a home match on Tuesday, September 16th when they take on Springfield College at 7:00 pm.
