The United States Coast Guard Academy women's volleyball team defeated Nichols College, 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-17), in Roland Gymnasium on Tuesday night to pick up their fourth consecutive win. Sophomore hitter
Alaina Corbin (Stafford, Va.) recorded a career-high 11 kills to lead all players.
Coast Guard improves to 5-2 on the season in the midst of the win streak, while Nichols moves to 0-8. The Bison will get another shot at their first win of 2026 when they visit Bates College (4-1) this Friday, the 18th, with first serve set for 6:00 PM ET.
Nichols could do very little to stop Corbin on the night, who hit at a blistering .500 rate. The Bears as a whole hit .352 for the match, peaking with a .387 first set. The Bison opened the game by getting out to a 6-5 lead before sophomore hitter
Corey Lemmer's (San Francisco, Calif.) kill opened a 12-0 run for the Bears. Corbin put down three kills during the stretch, and sophomore setter
Holly Davis (Sisters, Oreg.) served up four aces in a row following the run to help Coast Guard take the opener. Davis went on to record eight assists, eventually holding a three-way tie for the match lead with a pair of Bison.
It was no time wasted for the Bears in the second set, which saw them record 22 points before Nichols reached their tenth. The Bison were bogged down by a -0.138 hitting rate, with ten of Coast Guard's points in the set coming from visiting attack errors. Sophomore defensive specialist
Bella Samaniego (Yucaipa, Calif.) recorded all three of her assists in the set, and she would wind up just one dig shy of her career-high of nine for the game as a whole. Senior libero
Courtney Shire (Cape May, N.J.), like Davis, finished in a three-way tie with two Nichols players for the match-high nine digs.
Coast Guard was blindsided to start the third frame as Nichols rolled to a 5-0 start, prompting the hosts to burn their first timeout of the match. The Bears regrouped and eventually worked it back to ten-all, with a kill from freshman pin attacker
Ellie Glover (Colorado Springs, Colo.) helping the hosts take their first lead of the set. Glover recorded five of her eventual career-high eight kills in the frame. The Bison remained persistent despite their .097 hit rate for the set, with the Bears utilizing their own .357 rate to finish the game on a 14-7 run. Sophomore setter
Maddie Oates (Roma, Ga.) and her career-high six assists helped the Bears in the close out effort.
Coast Guard women's volleyball will be road warriors for the next two weeks, kicking off a six-game stint as the visiting team tomorrow night at Bridgewater State University (5-1), with first serve set for 6:00 PM ET. The Coasties will make their return to Roland Gym on September 29th to host Clark University (3-4) in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.
