United States Coast Guard Academy

Coast Guard women's volleyball team traveled to Roger Williams University Saturday morning. This match went to 4 sets and Coast Guard continued their winning streak by winning 3-1. 

With this win, the Bears' record improves to 7-2 so far this season, and the Hawks fall to 3-8 overall.  

The first set was back and forth as neither side could maintain more than a 3 point lead, until the Bears got 5 points in a row from down 19-21 to give them a 24-1 lead. The Hawks would get 1 more point in this set from a service error before the Bears won the set.  

Roger Williams took control in the second set as they jumped out to a 12-8 lead. The remainder of this set was back and forth as Coast Guard could not go on a run as the Hawks would take this set 25-19. 

The Bears got their run in the third set with 9 straight points to jump up to a 20-9 lead. The Hawks tried to mount a comeback with 3 straight points, but it was too high a mountain to climb as the Bears got 5 straight points to end the set. 

The fourth set started out immediately with a Hawks 5 point run followed immediately by an 8 point run for the Bears. This set would be a back and forth battle with Coast Guard coming out on top 25-21, and win the match 3 sets to 1. 

Standout players for Coast Guard included Senior Abby Schweitzer (Emmaus, Pa.) and Sophomore Corey Lemmer (San Francisco, Calif.) who both had 12 kills. Sophomore setter Ava Ahokovi (Honolulu, Hawai'i) finished the match with 21 assists. 

Match Two vs Worcester State. Box Score

The United States Coast Guard Academy women's volleyball team played Worcester State at Roger Williams University Saturday afternoon. Nothing can slow this Bears team down as they won their second match of the day, this one in 3 straight sets.  

The Bears have now won 7 matches in a row to make their record 8-2. The Lancers of Worcester State are still winless as they fall to 0-9. 

What started out at a close set tied at 4-4, quickly became all Coast Guard with two 5-point runs to take a quick win in the first set 25-15.  

Worcester State found themselves down early in the second set 4-1, before flipping the script and taking a 7-5 lead. The second set was back and forth until the Lancers scored 5 points in a row to take a 19-17 lead. The next 4 rallies were back and forth until Coast Guard took over again to end the set with 6 straight points to win the set 25-21.

The third and final set started out a Bear dominance as they jumped out to a 13-2 lead. The Lancers would get a little momentum back with a small run of 4 straight points, but it was not enough to stop the Bears as they would win this set 25-14.  

Standout players in this match for Coast Guard included Senior Abby Schweitzer and Sophomore Corey Lemmer who both had 13 kills. Sophomore Ava Ahokovi finished with 25 assists. Senior Libero, Courtney Shire had 17 digs in the match. 

The Bears will be back in action Tuesday, September 22nd, as they will travel to Smith College to start NEWMAC play. This match is scheduled for 7pm EST. The Smith College match is a rematch of last year's NEWMAC semifinal in which Coast Guard stood up to Smith on the road in a 3-0 win. Smith College comes into the match red hot as well, with a current record of 10-1 after splitting with William Smith and Union today.
