NORTON, Mass. – Mark Guentert and Weston Fortna won their singles matches and teamed to win at #1 doubles leading fifth-seeded Coast Guard to a 5-3 win over fourth-seeded Wheaton in the quarterfinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament.
Wheaton had beaten Coast Guard 6-3 during the regular season. The Bears improve to 6-10 on the season and will take on top-seed and 15-time defending NEWMAC champion MIT in the semifinals on Saturday at noon at MIT.
Guentert won 6-4, 6-3 at #2 singles while Fortna recorded a 6-1, 6-3 win at #3 singles. Robert Renfrow won at #1 singles winning the first set 7-5 before his opponent retired.
The match started with the Bears winning two of the three doubles matches as Guentert and Fortna won 8-5 at #1 doubles and Renfrow and Alex Mead won 8-2 at #2 doubles.
