Bears Fall at Mitchell

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team picked up an 8-2 victory over the Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Field.

Mitchell improves to 16-11-1 on the season while the Bears drop to 13-20 overall.

Mitchell pitchers Axel De Jesus and Troy Stangolimited the Bears to only five hits on the day. Stango (3-0 overall) worked 6.0 innings in relief to earn the victory, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three.

Coast Guard pushed across a run in the first thanks to an errant throw that left Blake Thompson on second base with no outs. Matt Hanks then moved him over to third with a single to left before Mark Behne brought him home with a ground ball to short. De Jesus later walked back-to-back batters to load the base with two outs, but he kept the damage to a minimum by getting a ground out to end the threat.

The Mariners tied the game in the bottom of the first on an RBI single to left-center by Evan Peck that scored Gavin LaLima. Mitchell then plated three runs in the second inning to pull ahead. Blaze Iannetti put the home team on top 2-1 with an RBI single through the right side, and Marc Dorsi later followed with a two-run double to right-center to bump the lead to three.

Mitchell added a pair of runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 6-1. Will Charkowsky scored on a wild pitch before Kenneth Olszewski added a sacrifice fly that brought in LaLima.

The Mariners tacked on two runs in the eighth as Iannetti drove in his second run of the game. Coast Guard got one back in the ninth on a two-out RBI single to left by Brendan McNeil, but Stango nailed down the final out to give Mitchell its first win over the Bears since 2008.

Coast Guard starter Colton Cannon (3-4) gave up six runs on eight hits and struck out five over 6.0 innings to take the loss. Justin Rebholz worked 2.0 innings of relief and surrendered two runs on two hits.

McNeil had two of the Coast Guard five hits in the game including a double.

The Bears are back in action on Friday when they play a doubleheader at Gordon at 2 p.m.
