Bears Fall in Semester Finale

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Liz Malman led the Camels with 27 points, eight rebounds and six assists leading Connecticut College to a 74-65 win over host Coast Guard.

Freshman Mairead Hynes added 19 points and seven rebounds and senior Carlee Smith finished with 18 points as the Camels won their fourth straight to improve to 7-1 on the season. Coast Guard drops to 2-4 on the year.

Conn. College used a 16-2 first half run turning a 13-10 deficit with 13:41 left into a 26-15 lead with 8:37 left in the first half.

Coast Guard would use a 7-2 run over the final two minutes of the half to cut the deficit to 36-30 at the break.

The Camels shot 50 percent from the field in the first half (15-30) while making 1 of 5 from 3-point range while Coast Guard was 12 of 34 (35.3 percent) from the floor in the opening half and connected on 4 of 8 from behind the arc.

Coast Guard the lead to one at 42-41 on a basket by senior Jamie Waterman with 15:54 left before the Camels answered with a 10-2 run, six of those points from Malman, for a 52-43 lead  with 11:58 remaining in the game.

The Bears would cut the lead to three on two different occasions, the last being 60-57 following a 3-pointer by senior Alexi Howland with 5:14 left before a layup by freshman Shaniqua Shaw and a pair of free throws by Hynes made the score 64-57 with 4:05 left.

Conn. College went 6 for 8 from the foul line in the final minute to ice the game.

Senior Alexi Howland led Coast Guard with 16 points while junior Torie Sutherland had 15 and senior Dani Knox 13 points for the Bears. Junior Meghan Fornaro had a game-high and career-high tying ten rebounds for the Bears to go with her nine points.

Freshman Gill Gerton added six points and eight rebounds for Coast Guard as the Bears outrebounded the Camels 41-35.

Coast Guard shot 37.1 percent in the game (23-62) including 8 of 16 from 3-point range while the Camels were 27 of 57 (47.4 percent) from the floor and 3 of 10 from 3-point range.

The Bears are back in action on Dec. 28th at against Nazareth at the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Florida.
