Bears Upset Bid Falls Short at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Andrew Acker registered a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds as MIT held off upset minded Coast Guard 53-49 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Sophomore Russell Johnson knocked down a pair of free throws with two seconds left to ice the game for MIT.

MIT improves to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play while Coast Guard drops to 2-11 overall and 0-3 in the NEWMAC.

Coast Guard had its biggest lead of the game 11-6 following a basket by junior David Anderson with 11:10 left in the first half. The Bears led 17-16 after a layup up by sophomore Ricky Rodriguez with 4:38 left, but MIT would score the final eight points of the half, the last five by Acker for a 24-17 halftime lead.

MIT took its largest lead of the game 30-19 with 18:23 left in the game scoring six of the first eight points in the second half.

The Bears would use a 9-2 spurt capped on a on old fashion 3-point play by sophomore Mark Krebs to pull to within 32-28 with 15:06 left in the game.

The Engineers would later use a 7-1 spurt to open up a 40-31 lead with 8:58 left.

Coast Guard would not go quietly as the Bears scored eight of the next nine points closing to within 41-39 after a basket by senior Devonte Weems with 5:10 left.

Rodriguez hit a 3-pointer with 35 seconds left to keep it a one possession game with MIT leading 49-47.

Sophomore Justin Pedley made a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left for MIT before Weems had a bucket with six seconds left to make the score 51-49.

Rodriguez had a season-high 15 points to lead Coast Guard while Anderson had his second double-double of the season to lead Coast Guard as he finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore Kevin Alvarez had a career-high four assists while sophomore Mark Krebs tied a season-high with six points to go with six rebounds for the Bears.

MIT shot 41.7 percent from the field (20-48) and made 2 of 10 from 3-point range in the win while Coast Guard shot 35.7 percent from the floor (20-56) and made 2 of 11 from behind the arc.

Coast Guard is back in action when the Bears will play their first home game since Dec. 11th when they host Clark on Saturday 1 p.m. and then host Sarah Lawrence on Sunday at 4 p.m.
