NEW LONDON, Conn.-The Coast Guard men's tennis team was competitive on the day but by the end of the contest it just wasn't enough as Babson prevailed 6-3 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match.
Freshmen Robert Renfrow (6-3, 6-0) and Weston Fortna each picked up singles wins for the Bears (3-8, 1-2 NEWMAC) but Babson (7-6, 2-1 NEWMAC) won the other four singles matches, putting them in great position for the victory. The all-freshman team of Fortna and Mark Guentert recorded the lone win in doubles competition for Coast Guard (8-6).
Renfrow and his partner, senior Blake Maurer, were also strong in doubles action before eventually succumbing by a final margin of 8-6. Maurer was also good in number one singles, forcing three sets before falling (6-1, 2-6, 4-6).
Sophomore Andrew Bryson also played well at number five singles but ultimately fell in a pair of tough luck sets (4-6, 5-7).
The Bears will return to action on Saturday, April 13th with a match against conference powerhouse MIT scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm.
