Petty Pitches Bears to 2-0 Win Over MIT

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn.--Senior Derek Petty threw eight shutout innings leading Coast Guard to a 2-0 win over MIT in the rubber game of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) three-game weekend series after the teams split a doubleheader yesterday.

Petty (5-2) scattered eight hits, walked two and struck out four to pickup his team-leading fifth win of the season after registering his first save of the season in the game one win over MIT yesterday.

Senior Tyler Vieira worked a one-two-three ninth inning to record his NEWMAC-high seventh save of the season.

Coast Guard improves to 18-11 overall and 8-6 in NEWMAC play while MIT drops to 16-6 overall and 11-4 in the conference. The Bears can secure a spot in the NEWMAC tournament with a win at Springfield tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.

Coast Guard scored the only run it would need in the first inning as senior Eric Gerken led off the bottom of the first with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Matt Hanks and scored on a two-out RBI single by senior Tyler Babkiewich.

MIT had a great opportunity to tie the game in the fifth when sophomore KJ Parent led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Kendall Helbert. The Engineers tried a suicide squeeze and Coast Guard senior catcher Cameron Carroll called a pitchout and Parent was tagged out ending the threat.

The Bears added an insurance run in the seventh as senior Mike Massaro led off with a single and classmate Ed Sella reached on an error to put runners on first and second. Carroll's bunt moved the runners up and senior Joe Petry's RBI ground out gave the Bears a 2-0 lead.

Parent was the only player on either team to have multiple hits as he add two including the only extra base hit of the game, a double.

Senior Max Ockner (3-2) was the tough luck loser for MIT. He worked the first seven innings and allowed seven hits, two runs -- one earned, while walking nobody and striking out five.
