Vieira's Four-Hitter Helps Bears Salvage Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEW LONDON, Conn.--Senior Tyler Vieira, the Bears closer, made his first career start and spun a four-hit shutout as Coast Guard salvaged a split of a non-conference doubleheader with Castleton State with a 1-0 nine inning win after the Spartans won the opener 1-0.

Hit and runs were at a premium in the doubleheader as the two teams combined for just 17 hits and the two run in 16 innings.

Vieira and Castleton's Patrick Riley locked horns in the nightcap with Riley (0-2) going 8 1/3 innings and allowing just six hits an earned run while walking three and fanning five.

The Spartans had the leadoff man on six times, but could not score as the Bears turned a pair of double plays and senior catcher Cameron Carroll gunned down a pair of runners stealing.

The defensive play of the game came in the fourth. Ryan Zielinski led off the inning with a double for the Spartans and moved to third on a ground out. Coast Guard freshman Mark Behne then barehanded a slow chopper to second and gunned down Zielinski to keep the game scoreless.

Coast Guard got its only run of the day to win game two in the bottom of the ninth when senior Ed Sella led off with a double to left field, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carroll.

Carroll had two of the Bears six hits in the game two win. Vieira (2-0) walked two and struck out four to pick up the shutout victory.

In the opener, Adam Greenlese pitched a two-hit shutout outdueling Coast Guard freshman Kyle Wood for the 1-0 win.

Greenlese allowed a pair of singles to Behne and sophomore Matt Hanks in the bottom of the first, but those were the only two hits Coast Guard would get in the opener. He walked three and fanned four to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

Wood was just as good matching zeros until the Spartans got their only run of the day in the seventh. Cameron Curler and Connor Hoagland led off the seventh with back-to-back singles following a fielder's choice, Matt McNamee's single loaded the bases and chased Wood. Macyn Clifford's sacrifice fly off Curt Barrett accounted for the only run.

Wood (1-1) pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed just five hits and did not walk a batter while striking out two to take the touch luck loss.

Hoagland had two of the Spartans five hits in the game one win.

Coast Guard is now 8-6 overall while Castleton State is 2-3 on the season.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday when they host Albertus Magnus in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
